Wow, you have been shortlisted as one of the candidates to be interviewed for a job which means you're a step away from getting the job. On that blessed email or phone call you're told the interview would be done over Skype and you are like, “I have never used Skype before not to mention a job interview”. Well, don't worry, this post is for you. I have used Skype for job interviews, chatting etc and my experiences have been awesome. Presented here are tips to help you better prepare for your own Skype job interview.
1. Prepare your surrounding
It is of utmost importance to consider the location where you would be having your Skype interview. If it is a webcam call, then the background behind you should be neutral. In other words, avoid distracting background. Also, it's important to choose a location that is quiet so that your computer doesn't pick up noise around. If you at home with other people, let them know you would be having an interview so you don't get interrupted during the interview. Lastly, you may want to consider using a headset. By using it, the interviewer will be able to hear you more clearly and with less distracting background noises.
2. Use a reliable connection
Make sure your internet connection is reliable. If you are using an internet key, make sure you have enough bandwidth (volume) that can take you through your interview. Check if your connection is good for Skype call by doing a test call.
3. Practice with a friend
You can also call a friend just to check if your webcam is ok, whether your sound is good etc. You can also record the call and listen it again later to see how it sounds and where you need to improve.
4. What is skype id?
It is important to get a professional skype ID. ID's such as “sexygirl2015” is not professional and therefore you should consider getting a different ID. For example, if your name is “John doe”, then an ID such as “john.doe” is good enough. You don't want to make a bad first impression so go ahead and get a professional skype ID right now.
5. Time Zone Check
You are probably having an interview over Skype because the job may be in another country or state other than yours. So make sure the appointment is ok for you. An interviewer may schedule an interview at 2:00PM per his time zone but in your country that may be 1:00AM in the Morning which may not be convenient for you. So make sure to communicate with the interviewer. In my case in particular, the interviewer and I usually agree on a time that is convenient for both for us.
6. What do I wear?
It depends. If you are having the interview at home, probably in your bedroom and no webcam is required, then what to wear may not be a big deal, but if it is going to be a webcam call then what you wear matters. Some authors recommend it's best to dress from head to toe or as you would when going for an in-person interview. The idea is that when you dress like you going in for an in-person interview, then you will feel like you're at an in-person interview.
